October 1995 saw the foundation of the Institute for German and European Studies at the University of Wroclaw (the capital of Lower Silesia), following a proposal by the latter's faculty of social sciences.
Given the geographical situation, close transborder co-operation with the neighbouring countries of Germany and the Czech Republic is one of the basic aspects of the institute's daily work. The aim of the institute is to train up specialists in transborder co-operation--chiefly from among students of political science.
The institute consists of three professorial chairs covering the following areas: German history in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries (head: Professor Romuald Gelles, who is also head of the institute); international economic relations and European integration (head: Professor Karl Blahut); and EU studies (head: Dr Elzbieta Stadtmüller).
